Bible Passage(s): II Samuel 11:1 - 12:13
Memory Verse: “Then David said to Nathan, \"I have sinned against the LORD.'' 2 Sam 12:13
Repentance simply defined means, a complete reversal of one's attitude and values and turning towards God. It is a show of remorse for our sins and wicked ways and coming to God for release and reprieve.
King David, whom God declared the man after His heart, gave us a good example of repentance. We read in II Samuel 11: 1- 12:13 how David committed adultery and murder. He had an illicit affair with another man's wife; Bathsheba, Uriah's wife. Uriah was one of the men prosecuting a war on behalf of Israel against the Ammonites. In order words, Uriah was on national duty.
After the illicit affair, Bathsheba became pregnant and David, in a bid to cover up, ordered Joab, his war commander, to put Uriah at the front line where the battle is fiercest, so that he could be killed. This David did in desperation, when Uriah refused to go in to Bathsheba, his wife, when David brought him back from the battle line. So that it will appear that Uriah was responsible for the pregnancy.
When Nathan, the prophet confronted David with his sins, David immediately realised the gravity of the offense and accepted responsibility for it. He came to God in total repentance. He did not attempt to cover up or rationalise the sins. Rather he came to God in total surrender and sought for forgiveness. How good will it be if we can follow the example of King David, accept responsibility for our faults and make a complete turnaround from our sins.
Our nation and indeed our world today, is in dire need of men like David, who will not struggle to cover up their sins, but accept that they have messed up badly and ask God for forgiveness. God desires that men should come to Him in total repentance and surrender. Our Lord Jesus Christ came into the world at a time like this; the period of Easter to save us from our sins. He was crucified on the cross, died for our sins and rose up on the third day, thus giving validity to our faith. His death on the cross is to reconcile us, sinners, to God His father and our creator. Man inherited sin from Adam who sinned against God, with his wife, Eve in the Garden of Eden, when they went against God's instructions and ate the forbidden fruit. Many of us are still going against God and eating the forbidden fruit today and we continue to revel in it, thinking that we are doing well. God is not mocked, whatever a man sows that he shall also reap.
Evil and evil people abound in our world today. We need righteous men and women to rise up and come into the gap in identification repentance on behalf of our nation and our world. The Bible says, 'If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word has no place in our lives.' -1 John 1:8-10. Anytime you turn away from injustice, corruption and wickedness, you become a co-sinner with the perpetrators of such evil. As such you need to repent.
This month, I enjoin you to confess and repent of your personal sins and sins by association as a citizen of this nation and that of the world. The Lord is ready to forgive. Just as He forgave King David, He will forgive us. Don't say your sins are too much and God cannot forgive a person like you. God says in Isaiah 1:18 - 20: \"Come now, let us reason together,\" ...... \"Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool. If you are willing and obedient, you will eat the best from the land; but if you resist and rebel, you will be devoured by the sword.\" For the mouth of the Lord has spoken.''
The Lord bless you and keep you. May He make His face to shine upon you and be gracious unto you. May the Lord lift up His countenance upon you and give you peace, now and forevermore. Amen.
Have a glorious and wonderful month.
