NEW BEGINNINGS

on Monday, 19 August 2019. Posted in 2019 Messages, Messages

Bible Passage(s): Isaiah 1: 1 - 20

Memory Verse: Come now, and let us reason together,” Says the Lord, “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall be as wool.
If you are willing and obedient, you shall eat the good of the land;" Isaiah 1: 18 – 19 (NKJV)

New beginnings beckons us in God and in our lives as a result of His mercy. The English Standard Version of the book of Lamentations, Chapter 3, verses 22 to 23 says, “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.

The Lord calls us to repentance as a people and nation. We have done terrible and incredible things. We have neglected and oppressed the poor. We have cared only for our own to the detriment of those who cannot help themselves. We have pillaged the land and shed innocent blood, either directly or indirectly. We have left undone those things we should have done, and shirked our responsibilities, running after filthy lucre. We have played politics with human lives, even sacrificing them to evil idols for political ambitions and power. Our sins have piled up to the heavens and God is not happy with us.

The Davidic Phenomenon

on Monday, 19 August 2019. Posted in 2019 Messages, Messages

Bible Passage(s): 2 Samuel 11: 1- 12

Memory Verse: “Then it happened one evening that David arose from his bed and walked on the roof of the king’s house. And from the roof he saw a woman bathing, and the woman was very beautiful to behold. 3 So David sent and inquired about the woman. And someone said, “Is this not] Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?” 4 Then David sent messengers, and took her; and she came to him, and he lay with her, … And the woman conceived; so she sent and told David, and said, “I am with child;" 2 Samuel 11: 2 - 5 (NKJV)

The triangular story of David, Bathsheba and Uriah is a familiar that brings out the phenomenon of the abuse of trust and power by man. David at the height of his reign and power as King in Israel stayed at home rather than go to the battle field. In this reckless idleness, he committed adultery and tried to cover it up. In so doing, he abused his power and privilege as Israel’s King and decreed the death of Uriah – a faithful soldier. This story is a caution to us about the abuse of trust. Some men and women alike, use their position of trust and power to oppress and abuse their people and followers, thinking they can get away with it that there will not be a day of reckoning. This story shows off David, a man who God referred to as being ‘after His own heart’; falling from grace to grass due to a momentary act indiscretion which led to the abuse of power.

THE MAN DIED!

Bible Passage(s): Genesis 3: 1 - 10

Memory Verse:    “6 When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. 7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; ……" Genesis 3: 6 – 7 (NIV)

The title of this message reminds me of a novel by Professor Wole Soyinka, the Nigerian Nobel Prize Winner of 1986, of the same title. However, whereas the book is about his prison notes, when he was incarcerated by a military regime at the start of the Nigerian civil war. My take here however, is to examine how man lost fellowship with God and how the negative consequences of this continues to plague man, even in our contemporary times.

The story in the reference Bible passage above is about how man died due to disobedience in the Garden of Eden. Man died the day and moment Adam and Eve took the forbidden fruit from the tree of life in the middle of the garden and ate it; contrary to the directives of God.

GRATITUDE!

on Monday, 29 April 2019. Posted in 2019 Messages, Messages

Bible Passage(s): Psalm 103

Memory Verse:    “Bless the Lord, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name.  Bless the  Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits:  Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases;  Who redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with loving-kindness and tender mercies;  Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things; so that thy youth is renewed like the eagle's" Psalm 103: 1 - 5

I was looking at a video sent to me on WhatsApp the other day and the motivational speaker, Steve, in response to a question by someone from the audience spoke about gratitude. He said, ‘’Gratitude changes your perception. Depression and joy cannot co-exist in the same place. Learn to look at all God has done for you and you will focus less on what you think you don’t have.’’

This is a very apt statement for our times and in particular this month when we remember the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. When we think of what He did for humanity on the cross at Calvary, to reconcile us to God His Father and bring us salvation, we should stand in gratitude and appreciate Him even more. He paid the supreme sacrifice, by laying down His life for us.

Immanuel – God with us!

Bible Passage(s): Genesis 39 & 40

Memory Verse: “Genesis 39: 2 - 4"

Still on the topic, The Abiding presence of God, the Message of Grace for February 2019, we continue this month to further examine and consider the implications of the abiding presence of God.

The name Immanuel simply means ‘God with us”. This is the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. He came into the world as man to bring salvation and restoration of our relationship with God. Therefore as we
………., I am reminded of this song by Chris Bowater,

In Your presence I am content
In Your presence there is light
Expressions of Your life
Revelations of Your pow’r and might
In Your presence I can bring
my love songs of fering,
I’m in the presence of my King.

As we proceed in this year of Harvest, there is a major requirement for us to enable us fully reap the harvest that God has provided for us. This is the abiding presence of God. We need the abiding presence of God to be with us always, as it was with Joseph and even the children of Israel as they journeyed through the wilderness towards their Promised Land, Canaan.

Bible Passage(s): Genesis 39 & 40

Memory Verse:    “2 The Lord was with Joseph so that he prospered and he lived in the house of his Egyptian master. 3 When his master saw that the Lord was with him and that the Lord gave him success in everything he did, 4 Joseph found favor in his eyes and became his attendant. Potiphar put him in charge of his household, and he entrusted to his care everything he owned." Genesis 39: 2 - 4

The reference passage is the story of Joseph’s life in Egypt. We know what happened to Joseph and led made him to become a slave in the house of Potiphar in Egypt.

The Year of Harvest!

Bible Passage(s): Isaiah 9: 1 - 5

Memory Verse:    "You have enlarged the nation and increased their joy; they rejoice before you as
people rejoice at the harvest, as warriors rejoice when dividing the plunder." Isaiah 9: 3

Harvest always brings joy with hope of an impending period of abundance and plenty. A bountiful harvest causes great rejoicing by the people. No more drought, hunger and suffering!

The year 2019 is our year of Harvest; both for the nation and the people of the land. For many, the out gone year was filled with suffering, hunger and pain. There was massive shedding of blood, terrorism and kidnapping in the land! Great scarcity, lack, fears and want were widespread! Many laboured and sowed, sometimes in tears and blood, but alas, nothing to show for it!
